Bollywood Actress in bikini - Swimsuit Babes

High on fashion : Kareena Kapoor

It was perhaps uncannily symbolic that Madhur Bhandarkar’s film Fashion became a runaway hit during 2008, for fashion and glamour were the buzzwords of the textile business during 2008 in India. The export figures for the fashion industry are ample proof of the magnificent performance of the industry—both hi-end and retail—during the past year. Published figures say that this year the industry has notched up $1.8 billion, and is growing at a healthy 20 to 30 per cent in the $35 billion global fashion market.

This year alone, in the four fashion weeks held in Delhi and Mumbai—the Lakme Fashion Week and the official Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week—over 80 international buyers from 19 countries and 100 domestic buyers participated in the shows in which over 80 designers showcased their latest designs. As many as 78 top models participated in the innumerable shows presented by senior, well-known designers as well as a cache of young, talented newcomers.

Designers like Tarun Tahiliani, Sabyasachi, Manish Arora, Ashish Soni, Ritu Kumar, Ritu Beri, Manish Malhotra, Neeta Lulla, Pria Kataria Puri and others have an impressive list of international clients. Indian designers like Ashish Soni, Pria Kataria Puri, Ritu Kumar and Ritu Beri are already presenting their collections in London, New York, Milan and Melbourne. Business tie-ups also bring more money. Sunit Verma’s link with Tuscan Verve, Rohit Bal’s watches for Titan, Manish Arora’s line for Reebok, JJ Valaya’s designs for Ferns ‘n Petals and Ritu Beri’s designs for Lee Jeans have yielded super results.

However, 2008 was special for the fashion and glamour business. The link between Bollywood and its favourite fashion designers grew into a worldwide phenomenon this year. Akki Narula designed the dazzling, sexy look and clothes for the incredible zero-size Kareena Kapoor in the dud film Tashan. The film also brought a media-blitz because of the romance of Kareena and Saif Ali Khan.

Neeta Lulla designed the opulent clothes worn by Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan for Jodhaa Akbar and made history come alive. Manish Malhotra and Akki Narula designed the look for Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham in Dostana, yet another success story. To top it all, Shabina Khan and Manish Malhotra designed the looks for Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur for the biggest hit of last year Jab We Met. Indeed, the very visible Kareena, appearing at umpteen awards functions and stage shows during 2008, contributed hugely to the fashion industry’s success during the year. Every major film this year had a senior designer contributing to its well-packaged, sleek look.

During the year, younger fashion designers created a huge market for collections which were snapped up by the large number of mall shops and chain stores in India and other countries, where the elite shop for clothes. Almost 55 designers showed their work for teens, working couples and even children this year, making designer clothes (western as well as Indian) a must for everyone in even middle class families in urban India.

The procession of showstoppers and the huge publicity given to them was another feather in the cap of the fashion industry. This year, a record 27 showstoppers in the major fashion events included some of the most celebrated men and women in the glamour and sports industry — Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Minisha Lamba, Raima Sen, Sridevi, Sriya Saran, Preeti Jhangiani, Sameera Reddy, Masumeh, Prachi Desai, Kunal Khemu, Mandira Bedi, Sreesanth, Anil Kapoor, Celina Jaitley and Sandhya Mridul. This, in addition to models from across the world, added a special zing to the industry’s achievement and fame.

All of these celebrities as well as the top models also displayed a wide range of cocktail and party wear in the season’s favourite colours like red, pink, white, silver and gold, green and mauve. Additionally, through the year, many fashion events showcased collections of sportswear, casual wear and ready-to-wear clothes to meet the fancies of the young and rich.

India’s fashion industry scaled greater heights in 2008 because of the sheer variety and styles offered with an aura of beauty and energy. The colours were vibrant, the looks were unforgettable and the appeal was irresistible. As Rathi Vinay Jha, director-general of the Fashion Design Council of India says: "Indian fashion is a rare combination of creativity and commercial viability. With such a treasure of traditional textiles and crafts in our kitty, we can surely attract the whole world to buy our clothes and accessories."

Priyanka's Plastic Surgery

Priyanka Chopra has been the toast of the year for 2008. The actress had two consecutive hits in this year. If the hard hitting Madhur Bhandarkar's film Fashion projected Priyanka as the serious actress, the extremely commercial Bollywood flick Dostana projected her as the queen of the Box Office. The hits have completely wiped away the negatives of her earlier films like Love Story 2050. No actress had two consecutive hits in this year.

The actress of late has also been looking ravishing and extremely sensuous. If the sexy figure could be attributed to the regular visits to the gym, and a regulated life style, many feel the glow on the face, the better shape of the nose, and the curvier and full lips could be attributed to the knife of the plastic surgeon.

The rumor mill has it that Priyanka has undergone plastic surgery not once but multiple number of times on her face to get the desired look. In reality a comparative look at her, from her Miss World days till today reveal the reality. The transformation, from the ugly ducking, to being the Cleopatra of Bollywood, has been so pronounced, that it has not missed the naked eye.

Small is Big in Bollywood '08

The film industry which is reeling under recession saw a year of small wonders in Bollywood with low cost films by young directors ringing the cash counters, while big budget films with star-studded cast bombing despite the hype.

Taking off from last year where films like 'Bheja Fry' and 'Khosla Ka Ghosla'were successful, 2008 also saw a variety of small budget films sans star power raking up good moolah.

The trend started with 'Jannat' followed by 'Aamir', 'A Wednesday', 'Rock On', 'Welcome to Sajjanpur'. They drew in the audience on basis of a varied story line and content. Even horror flicks, Vikaram Bhatt's '1920' and Ram Gopal Varma's 'Phoonk' managed satisfactory sales.

Big budgeted and much hyped movies like 'Tashan', 'Love Story 2050', 'Drona', 'Yuvraj', 'Heroes' bit the dust while Shah Rukh Khan's 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' fared below expectations.

The film RNDJ, however, was able to bring smiles back on the faces of theatre and multiplex owners as audiences returned to the halls after the Mumbai terror attacks.

The year will sign off with Aamir Khan's 'Ghajini' which has already generated a huge buzz with the actor's new eight pack abs.

Recent recession has forced corporates to renegotiate budgets of high priced film projects. Filmmaker Makesh Bhatt said that 90 per cent of the films had to be put on hold and underproduction movies have been delayed due to the slowdown.

Bollywood's Sexiest Celebs of 2008

UK's Eastern Eye claimed Katrina Kaif to be the sexiest Asian woman, and John Abraham to be the sexiest Asian man of 2008. But even Aishwarya, Shah Rukh, Priyanka, Bipasha… have made it to the 'Sexiest Asians' list!

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif is not only the most searched celeb as per the Google Zeitgeist list but London's Eastern Eye has also proclaimed her to be the Sexiest Asian Woman (2008). Though Katrina is 'touched' by the poll results, she says she isn't too attached to 'lists' as they change every Friday. And if one is up today, they could well be down tomorrow.

Bollywood's fabulous females, Hollywood's mean men

Girl power ... Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Like most Bollywood movies, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (RNBDJ) has hardly been reviewed in Britain. Reviews in the Indian media have been average. It is striking, then, that the average rating given to it by female reviewers on IMDb is 10 out of 10.

The critics have missed a treat. RNBDJ is a remarkable movie: not just for its great charm and warmth, but also for its clever twist on sexual politics. The plot is something like Dirty Dancing, with the gender roles reversed. It's the resolute female lead who lives her life behind a tough, unemotional shell, and the shy male lead who gets a makeover and learns how to dance.

It's hard to imagine RNBDJ being made in Hollywood now, though it's the sort of thing that might have starred Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant once upon a time. In recent years, Hollywood seems to have become more formulaic and more conservative, turning out a succession of heroes who are jerks and heroines who are drips. This summer's big hit, Iron Man, may have been the ultimate example. Pepper Potts has nothing to do except wait around for the entire movie being deferential, until Tony Stark deigns to promote her from skivvy to skivvy with benefits. Benefits for him, naturally.

Meanwhile, Bollywood – which is often stereotyped as being both formulaic and conservative – has started to allow its female characters more strength, and its male characters more congeniality. On this site, Nirpal Dhaliwal has compared Bollywood's Dostana to Hollywood's I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry. Both were about straight men pretending to be gay. The difference, Dhaliwal observed, was that Dostana "does so without the annoying frat-house humour and with much more warmth."

Bollywood has lately produced mainstream blockbusters such as Veer-Zaara, an inverted fairytale in which a man languishes in prison while two brave women set about rescuing him. 2006's Fanaa cast a heavily pregnant woman as the steely, competent boss of an anti-terrorist unit. Refreshingly, there was no suggestion that her pregnancy made her less competent, nor that motherhood would be incompatible with her work. If the character had a male partner, he did not appear. Compare that with Knocked Up.

Of course, Bollywood is still producing plenty of dross, some of which is unspeakably sexist. But there are signs that the tide is moving in a positive direction. At the same time, Hollywood seems to be going the opposite way. Where once we had Sarah Connor and Ripley, now we have Catwoman and Elektra, whose characterisations don't stretch beyond the tightness of their costumes. Even in films aimed at a female audience, such as Sex and the City, gender roles are rigidly enforced. Women do idiotic things like obsessing over shoes and weddings, while men do idiotic things like sleeping around and failing to communicate.

Back in the 1940s, Hollywood knew how to bring in a female audience. It created heroines with guts and heroes with hearts. These days, appealing to adult women is a low priority. The most profitable audiences in the west are children, teenage boys, or – as with Lord of the Rings or Star Wars – both.

If Hollywood wants to lure women back to the box office, perhaps it should check out why Indian women go in droves to see films like Dostana or RNBDJ. If you're looking for something sweet, engaging and uplifting over the holidays, you could do worse than check them out, too.

Is this biggest Bollywood crossover flick ever?

Is ‘Chandni Chowk to China’ the biggest film of an international scale that Bollywood has seen in the recent times? Will it be THE crossover film coming out of our country? If the theatrical promo of this Nikhil Advani directed film is any indication, this seems to be pretty much the case. Unveiled over the weekend gone by, the theatrical promo stuns from beginning till the end as it is truly grandiose and spectacular.

Says a source close to the film, "Nikhil (Advani) has gone all out in making sure that Chandni Chowk to China lives up to the mammoth expectations that people have from this Akshay Kumar starrer. The film is being pitched as a film that takes inspiration from Akshay's real life journey from being a chef to a superstar. Due to this the stakes are high and audience has to be presented with a truly grand affair that justifies the claims that have been made."

So what one gets is not just an ample dose of Akshay Kumar as he gets into the martial art act but also the kind of visuals that have been associated with Chinese classics such as ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’.

"The martial arts have to be seen to be believed. Also, a fortune has been spent on the special effects to make the film look world class. You have a look at the theatrical promo and you would get an idea for yourself that how spectacular the setting of the film has been. Also, what sets apart Chandni Chowk to China from any other routine masala flick is that it is not merely an action comedy but has a deeper storyline to it. There are some Chinese legends that have been unearthed in the film and Akshay Kumar unwittingly becomes a part of them", adds the source.

With Deepika Padukone in a double role and music, which seems all set to be a chartbuster, ‘Chandni Chowk to China’ is all set to be the biggie which would change the fortunes of Bollywood as it enters into 2009.

Bollywood looks to 'King Khan' for year-end boost

Bollywood's first major release since the Mumbai attacks opens in theatres here Friday, with the film industry hoping star actor Shah Rukh Khan and director Aditya Chopra can guarantee a huge hit.

"Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" (Match Made In Heaven) sees "SRK" or "King Khan", as he is known, play Surinder, a soberly-dressed middle-aged man who falls in love with a fun-loving younger woman called Taani (Anushka Sharma).

Opposites attract and the odd couple marry, but their union is strained until Taani persuades Surinder to take part in a reality dance competition and he is transformed.

Khan and Chopra first worked together on the latter's debut film "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (Bravehearts Get The Bride). The 1995 film propelled Khan to Bollywood superstardom.

The film was one of the most successful Indian movies in history and is still being shown in Mumbai cinemas.

Theatre owners owners and film companies are hoping that the Khan-Chopra magic formula can work again.

Bollywood was tightening its belt even before the November 26-29 attacks that killed 163 innocent people and injured nearly 300, with audience figures falling during the past year.

Two big films released for the annual Hindu festival of Diwali did only modest business, while Bollywood was hit by a damaging union strike in early October.

"We are hoping that this film will turn the tables. Shah Rukh is Shah Rukh," said Nester D'Souza, head of business development at the Metro Theatre cinema in south Mumbai.

"We all are hoping that this will rejuvenate interest in moviegoers and they will come back to theatres. For the last two weeks, in spite of the Eid (al-Adha) festival not many people came to theatres.

"There is fear in the minds of the people but for 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' there is a very strong buzz in the market because this film looks promising and has also been promoted well."

Khan, who last weekend was awarded Malaysia's equivalent of a knighthood and has been a vocal critic of the Mumbai attacks, describing the militants as "un-Islamic", has said time has flown since he and Chopra last worked together.

Their previous joint venture was "Mohabbatein" (Love Stories), in 2000.

"This film is a comedy and has a love angle to it. Also, I play a very common man in the film unlike the romantic heroes that I have played earlier in my films," Khan said.

"I hope people love this film as they have loved my other films."

Leading trade analyst Komal Nahta told the Bombay Times this week that "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" had all the ingredients of a blockbuster.

"It is a classic underdog story of a guy turning from zero to hero and a familiar territory that Shah Rukh Khan excels in romance," he said.

"A sureshot formula that is bound to find an instant connection with the masses."

Later this month hopes are pinned on Aamir Khan's "Ghajini", about a man with memory loss who tattoos himself and takes Polaroid pictures to remember events and people, and the animation "Jumbo", with the voice of Akshay Kumar.

Both are released on Christmas Day, December 25.

"Audiences are finally in for a treat. These stars are definitely the crowd-pullers and the year may end on a good note for the industry," analyst Taran Adarsh told the Bombay Times this week.

Bangalore pitches for Shah Rukh's new heroine - Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

She used to be softspoken, bright and studious, but model Anushka Sharma also has what it takes to reach the top in showbiz, say people in this city as she makes her dream debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Friday.

While her mentor and fashion guru Prasad Bidappa says Bangalore girl Anushka was always a good learner and he had an inkling that she would do well in the glamour and entertainment industry, her friends say she has always "stood out in the crowd".

"Anushka showed her zeal in learning things fast. She started walking the ramp perfectly just after a few days of guidance. She was agile and had a perfect body language. She was a good learner and worked hard to reach the top. It did not surprise me when she got such a good opportunity in Bollywood," Bidappa, who also groomed Deepika Padukone, told IANS.

Well-known designer Wendell Rodricks spotted Anushka at an event in Bangalore and saw her potential. He brought her to Mumbai and made her the showstopper in his Les Vamps show at the Lakme India Fashion Week.

After making a mark as a model, Anushka did big assignments for products like Fiat Palio and Silk and Shine products.

A trained bharatanatyam dancer, Anushka is playing a dancer who gets married to a nerd in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Former model and Kannada actress Andrita Ray says Anushka's entry into filmdom brings hope for others who are trying to make it big in filmdom.

"Certainly this was the most encouraging news for many models in the city who are trying for a foot hold in the film industry," said Andrita, who forayed into the Kannada film industry with director Mahesh Babu's "Meravanige".

Andrita remembers Anushka as a softspoken girl.

"More than me, some of my best known friends who describe her as one girl who could be noticed even in a big crowd.

“Though I did not have too many interactions with her, I was very happy to see her getting such a big break. And what makes it more exciting is the fact that she was chosen after more than a hundred girls were interviewed," said Andrita.

Some of Anushka's friends who studied in Mount Carmel College with her say they were not at all surprised that she chose a film career.

"Working in films was her first ambition," said a friend.

One of her teachers on request of anonymity said she was surprised when she saw Anushka's photograph in a newspaper with Shah Rukh. "She was very studious and I thought she would complete her post graduation in economics," said the teacher.

Mallika Sherawat Honored at Diversity Awards

Sultry Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat, considered by many to be India’s leading sex symbol, was presented with the Renaissance Artist Award during the 16th annual Diversity Awards held Nov. 23 at the Globe Theater here.

Having previously been voted one of Asia’s 100 most beautiful people by “Cover,” the Hong Kong-based fashion and beauty magazine, Sherawat seemed a bit taken aback by the fact that she had been presented with an award from the Multicultural Motion Picture Association, which hosted the awards night.

“Miracles do happen,” she told India-West during her walk down the red carpet. “I’m told that I’m the first Indian actress to be getting this award, but I’ve always considered myself a citizen of the world, so I don’t want to pigeon-hole myself. The more ingredients in a dish, the more interesting it is.”

Though born Reema Lamba, Sherawat, who went on to earn a degree in philosophy from Miranda House at Delhi University, adopted the screen name “Mal lika” (which means “empress”) to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema.

The concept of the Diversity Awards, created by the MMPA, was founded on the ideal that a wide variety of talents should be honored for the roles they have played and continue to play and bestow appreciation upon their commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their craft.

Sherawat’s career spans two continents. She made her first onscreen appearance in Surjit Bindrakia’s music video “Lak Tunoo,” before she attracted wide notice with her appearance in the 2003 film “Khwahish,” which, while quite racy, was heralded for its naturalism and realism.

In the following year, Sherawat starred in “Murder,” a film inspired by the Hollywood release “Unfaithful,” that once again challenged Indian film standards. The film not only became one of the biggest hits of the year but also earned Sherawat a Zee Cine Award nomination for best actress.

She later made news when she had a small role in Jackie Chan’s film, “The Myth,” and made a widely publicized appearance at the Cannes Film Festival to promote the film. Not soon afterwards, her performance in the 2006 film “Pyaar Ke Side Effects,” co-starring Rahul Bose, once again earned her praise in the Indian film industry.

Working in the Tamil film industry, Sherawat has a supporting role in “Dasavatharam,” starring Kamal Hasan and Jayapradha, and she essayed a “vampish role” in Himesh Reshammiya’s “Aap Ka Suroor — The Real Love Story.”

Sherawat has just finished shooting “The Hiss,” directed by Jennifer Lynch, the daughter of famed director David Lynch, which also co-stars Irfaan Khan “It’s my first American movie with an American director,” she told India-West.

The film is about “the ancient legend of the shape-shifting snake, which is very popular in the Far East and the eastern countries,” she explained, adding that “I definitely want to work here (in Hollywood), and a lot of interesting opportunities are coming my way, and I want to make the most of it.”

Other celebrities on hand to receive Diversity Awards included rapper Ludacris, director Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Secret Life of Bees”) and screenplay writer Diane English (“The Women”).

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai to croon for Raavana

Abhishek Bachchan and wife, Aishwarya Rai are getting a chance, which was lost by Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor. They are crooning a song for their latest movie.

Music genius A R Rahman had composed a song initially meant for Mani Ratnam’s project, Lajjo. But when Lajjo was shelved, Rahman decided to use the track for Raavana.

According to the original plan, the track for Lajjo was to be sung by its cast Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Now that it is used by Raavana, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai will do the honours.

According to Rahman, “Some of the songs in Lajjo were generic, so we have translocated them into Raavana. Such things happen once in a while. No regrets. There is no time for that. Regret is boring. Mani s new film is a new genre for me. I ve done nothing like this before. So that s exciting.”

Much has been written and discussed about how Shiney Ahuja ended up pissing out his industry senior like Preity Zinta on the sets of Jahnu Barua's Har Pall and how she stopped talking to him on the film's sets. Recently in an interview too she made a dig at Shiney stating that she would never call him her friend or invite him for dinner. But now news is trickling out that even Eesha Koppikar, who also stars in Har Pall, had taken an aversion to Shiney Ahuja.

A unit member narrated, "A cold war of sorts was already happening between Shiney Ahuja and Preity Zinta and then Eesha too joined the 'I hate Shiney' bandwagon. Shiney and Eesha would often be seen arguing with each other on the sets. They even resorted to taunting each other in front of the unit members. One day Eesha came on sets after a gap of few weeks. But as soon as she entered, Shiney went up to her and taunted at her saying she has grown very fat in these last few weeks and immediately started laughing. Not the one to take down such an insult lying down, Eesha hit back at Shiney by telling him that he has turned more uglier than before! Hearing this all those standing around started laughing and Shiney had to literally hide his face at the unexpected hit back by Eesha."

Hot! What makes Priyanka Chopra tick

Think Priyanka Chopra, think Hot Bod. But here is a self-confessed gym-hater! Find out what keeps Piggychops ticking, and in style.

Working out is always dull; I don't like working out, I hate it but I was training for Dostana along with Fashion.

I had put on a little bit of weight for Fashion, so I had to lose that plus I had to tone in. It was tough and I won't deny it. I was training every day, I would go to gym for two hours and I hate it.

I like solid colours, I don't like wearing too much jewellery, so I am very subtle in my taste that way.

I try to experiment once in a while may be with a little bit of bling and then I come back to the safety zone.

I like simple cuts and solid colours and that is what my character in Dostana is. She is just wearing stylish great clothes but does not over accessorise at all.
